Sunderban

The Sunderban delta was formed approx 3000 year before and human settlement was started approx 230 year before. The total area of Indian part of Sunderban is approx 9630 sq. km. including 4264 sq. km. of forest area and 5366 sq. km. of human settlement area. The total number of islands in Sunderban are 102, out of that 54 island are inhabited by human being human island and 48 island are core island. In Sunderban you will find 120 species of fern, 35 species of mammals, 260 species of birds.

The Sunderbans has been declared Tiger Reserve in the year 1973, Crocodile project in the year 1976, National Park in the year 1984, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1987 and in the year 1989 a Biosphere Reserve located in the Sunderban delta in the Indian state of West Bengal. The forests aren't just mangrove swamps though; they include some of the last remaining stands of the mighty jungles which once covered the Gangetic plain. This region is densely covered by mangrove forests, and is one of the largest reserves for the Royal Bengal Tiger.

There is much more wildlife here than just the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris). Most importantly, mangroves are a transition from the marine to freshwater and terrestrial systems, and provide critical habitat for numerous species of small fish, crabs, shrimps and other crustaceans that adapt to feed and shelter, and reproduce among the tangled mass of roots, known as pneumatophores, which grow upward from the anaerobic mud to get the supply of oxygen. Fishing Cats, Macaques, wild boars, Common Grey Mongooses, Foxes, Jungle Cats and spotted deer are also found in abundance in the Sunderbans.
